Using Design Thinking to Redesign the Educational Experience

2021

In a world that is ever changing and full of uncertainties, there is an undeniable need to equip students with competencies that exceed cognitive knowledge, thus enabling them to develop their individual potentials. Using case study methodology, Design Thinking and ProblemBased Learning, this paper presents a program that brought together students and teachers from different faculties with the purpose of developing innovative solutions to important and pressing societal challenges. Given the unprecedented context generated by the worldwide spread of SARS–COV2 Virus, the program challenged students to find solutions to redesign the educational process. The aim was to equip them with the skil…

Enhanced calculation of optimal gradient programs in reversed-phase liquid chromatography

2003

Abstract The resolution of a mixture of 16 β-blockers under gradient elution was optimised using both isocratic and gradient training sets, with a reversed-phase column and acetonitrile–water eluents. Error theory was applied to measure the information extracted from different gradient experimental designs. This allows checking the expected accuracy when gradient predictions exceed the initial solvent concentrations tested in the training set. This work applies the results on modelling found in a previous study [J. Chromatogr. A 1018 (2003) 169] where the performance of several retention models was compared. Enhanced retention predictions were applied to the optimisation of gradient program…

A mathematical tool for describing the behaviour of a dense effluent discharge

2009

In many cases a dense effluent has to be discharged in the environment with possible harmful consequences. The preferred design for the relevant discharge unit is that of a simple or multi-port diffuser issuing jets at a given inclination above the horizontal. This work presents the follow-on developments of a model previously proposed to predict the behaviour of inclined dense jets issuing in a stagnant environment. It consists of a set of three ordinary differential equations that can be solved by standard numerical methods. Model outputs include information on the trajectory, spreading and dilution of inclined dense jets, return point position and concentration. Interestingly the model a…

Membrane distillation heat transfer enhancement by CFD analysis of internal module geometry

2011

Module geometry optimisation can be a crucial matter in all separation processes using selective or hydrophobic membranes, e.g. reverse osmosis (RO) and membrane distillation (MD). In fact the choice of suitable channel shape and size can dramatically affect the performance of the process. With reference to the membrane distillation process, temperature polarization phenomena and pres¬sure drops along the channels largely affect the process efficiency (i.e. the efficient use of temperature driving force for the passage of vapour through the membrane) as well as pressure distribution, module mechanical resistance and pumping costs. Several works have been presented so far in literature on th…

Testing experimental designs in liquid chromatography (I): Development and validation of a method for the comprehensive inspection of experimental de…

2020

The basis of interpretive optimisation in liquid chromatography is the prediction of resolution, from appropriate solute retention models. The reliability of the process depends critically on the quality of the experimental design. This work develops, validates and applies a general methodology aimed to evaluate the quality of any training experimental design, which will be applied in Part II to design optimisation. The methodology is based on the systematic evaluation of the uncertainties associated to the prediction of retention times in comprehensive scans of both isocratic and gradient experimental conditions. It is able to evaluate comprehensively experimental designs of arbitrary comp…

Swoop: A Web Ontology Editing Browser

2006

In this paper, we describe Swoop, a hypermedia inspired Ontology Browser and Editor based on OWL, the recently standardized Web-oriented ontology language. After discussing the design rationale and architecture of Swoop, we focus mainly on its features, using illustrative examples to highlight its use. We demonstrate that with its web-metaphor, adherence to OWL recommendations and key unique features such as Collaborative Annotation using Annotea, Swoop acts as a useful and efficient web ontology development tool. We conclude with a list of future plans for Swoop, that should further increase its overall appeal and accessibility.

Time and the Design of Web-Based Learning Environments

2005

Introduction Design can be seen as a form of creation, which involves complexity and synthesis (Goel & Pirolli, 1992; Schon, 1987). In a broad sense, anyone who designs is a designer. This means that unlike analysts or critics, designers put elements together and bring new creations into being. In so doing they deal with many variables and constraints, some initially known and some discovered through the design process (Etelapelto, 1998). According to Burgoon, Buller, and Woodall (1996), it is typically human to affect and change one's environment. However humans are affected by their physical surroundings as well. Schon (1987) perceives all human constructive and creative activity as desig…

Addiopizzo benvenuta legalità

2009
